All About Me - Empowering ADHD Kids

ADHD children often get a bad rap. Their peers tease them. Their grades suffer. They get into trouble. Knowing that my 6-year-old son has ADHD, I don't want him growing up with these stereotypes plaguing him. I want him to know that he is a special creation of the Lord.

How does someone accomplish this with all the stigma that surrounds ADHD? On an ordinary shopping trip to Barnes & Noble, I found a wonderful workbook titled Empower ADHD Kids! Practical Strategies to Assist ADHD Children in Developing Learning and Social Competencies. Written by Becky Daniel-White and published by Key Education (an imprint of Carson-Dellosa Publishing LLC, Greensboro, North Carolina, 2005), this book provides lessons for elementary school students. It covers what ADHD is, how it might affect them, how to eat smart, how to learn despite having ADHD, how to cope in relationships with others, and how to see themselves as special and important.

This book is available on sites like Amazon and Barnes & Noble

After yesterday's official diagnosis of my son, I started this morning on our first lesson. Our main goal of the first lesson was for Squirmy to see himself as SPECIAL. The book encouraged the student to make an All About Me poster.

Using stencils, we created stars for the poster. We used letter stickers to spell out the title. He used stencils to make special signs and pictures. And finished by putting stickers on the poster that described some of his likes. Apparently, Squirmy wants to travel the world to see such sites as Italy, France, and England.

With this new book in hand, I plan on creating some helpful posters to go along with these lessons, most, of which, will probably be available in my TpT store.

If you have a struggling learner suffering from ADHD, I encourage you to look for this book. Incorporate special lessons on teaching them about themselves, their condition, and on why they are special in God's eyes!
